Lawmakers pressed for answers on Capitol Hill today over the attack in Benghazi, Libya last year that claimed the lives of several Americans.
A House committee spent about six hours examining the attack at the United States consulate. Three self-described whistleblowers said that mistakes made by State Department Officials cost American lives.
The main witness was Gregory Hicks. Hicks was the second highest ranking diplomat in Libya at the time of the attacks. He took over for Christopher Stevens after he was killed.
Republicans pressed Hicks about the night of the incident and the days after. One of the biggest revelations is that the attacks were not borne from a video discrediting Islam but instead an elaborate plan to storm the consulate. The explanation debunked testimony from UN Ambassador Susan Rice who verified the video sparked the protests.
Hicks’ testimony fueled further speculation that the words terrorism were removed from the description of the incident because it was a presidential election year. The Benghazi Libya attacks took place 8 weeks before the voters headed to the polls to select the president for the next four years.
But this week’s hearing may also have implications for the 2016 presidential election.
Hillary Clinton who is riding a wave of popularity especially among Democrats is expected to be the clear front-runner to succeed Barack Obama if Democrats lead the electorate. But US objectives so far have amounted to failure in Libya.
Republicans are already describing her as a state official who neglected her main responsibility to protect government employees.
In what’s amounting to be a big headache for the White House, House Speaker John Boehner is now calling for all emails pertaining to communications between State Department officials to be turned over. Other Republicans urged more whistleblowers to come forward and speak out.

Gregory Hicks testifies that he was called on by the State department not to talk to Investigators, and was Harassed by after he was interviewed.
Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC) used his short time addressing former deputy chief of mission for the U.S. in Libya, Gregory Hicks, to establish the fact that the American diplomatic staff in Libya were “embarrassed” by the White House’s effort to blame the Benghazi attack on an inflammatory YouTube video. Gowdy established that the State Department had informed the Libyan government on the day after the attack that “Islamic terrorists” were likely behind the assault.
“When Ambassador [Christopher] Stevens talked to you perhaps minutes before he died, as a dying declaration, what did he say to you?” Gowdy asked.
“He said, ‘Greg, we’re under attack,” Hicks replied.
Gowdy and Hicks established that there was no demonstration outside the consulate that day. He noted that U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice proceeded to blame the attack on a video. When asked what his reaction to Rice’s statements was, Hick’s replied, “I was stunned. My jaw dropped. And I was embarrassed.”
Gowdy read from a portion of an email form an aide to former Sec. Hillary Clinton which stated that the State Department had informed the Libyan government that the individuals who carried out the attack were linked to “Islamic terrorists.”
“Mr. Hicks, I want to know, number one, why in the world would Susan Rice go on five Sunday talk shows and perpetuate a demonstrably false narrative?” Gowdy asked. “And secondarily, what impact did it have on the ground in Benghazi the fact that she contradicted the president of Libya?”
Hicks declined to answer the first question, but said Rice’s statements helped facilitate introducing FBI investigators into Libya. Bureacuracy in Llbya hampered the investigation’s progress, however, and the crime scene was left unsecured for 18 days

‘Greg, we are under attack,’ Ambassador Stevens told Hicks on the phone. Those were the last words he heard from Stevens.
Throughout the night, sources say Americans on the ground in Libya at times felt helpless and abandoned.
